Background removal, explained
Removing a background means separating the main subject of a photo from the rest of the scene, leaving everything else transparent. This used to be hours of Photoshop work with the pen tool and layer masks; today an AI model does about 95% of the job in a couple of seconds.
QuitaFondo uses MODNet, an openly licensed portrait matting model, running directly in your browser. Rather than simply deciding which pixels are subject and which are background, it computes a partial transparency value for every edge pixel. That is what stops hair, glasses or a pet's fur from ending up with a hard scissor-cut outline, and gives you a natural transition instead.
Why it runs on your own device
Most background removal services upload your photo to their servers, process it there and send the result back. That means trusting whatever they do with it. Here the model is downloaded once — 7 to 13 MB depending on your hardware — and from then on the cutout is computed on your own laptop or phone. Your image never travels anywhere, which also means you can use the tool on client photos, internal documents or anything you simply would rather not hand to a third party.
The trade-off is that speed depends on your device. On desktop Chrome or Edge the tool uses your graphics card and takes a second or two per image. On a phone, or in browsers without GPU acceleration, expect five to fifteen seconds. The first image is always the slowest because the engine is still downloading; after that it stays cached in your browser.
Tips for a better cutout
- Look for contrast. A dark subject against a dark background is the hardest case there is. If you get to choose the photo, choose the one that separates subject from background most.
- Keep the subject in focus. Edges blurred by depth of field or motion are ambiguous for the model too.
- Avoid reflections and glass. Glass, water and very shiny surfaces create semi-transparent areas that almost always need a touch-up.
- One person beats a crowd. The model is trained on portraits; heavily overlapping figures can end up with gaps.
- Start from decent resolution. If your source is 300 px wide, there is no fine edge left to recover.
When the cutout is not perfect
No automatic cutout is right 100% of the time, and promising otherwise would be dishonest. On well-lit portraits the result is usually publishable as-is. On tricky objects, mesh, smoke or hair against a same-tone background, treat the cutout as a starting point and tidy the edges in your usual editor — you will still have skipped most of the work. Download PNG or TIFF if you plan to keep editing, since both keep transparency losslessly.

The model is trained mainly on people and portraits, and results there are excellent, hair included. Objects, products and pets usually work well when they contrast with the background, though tricky edges — glass, mesh, smoke — may need a touch-up afterwards.

Yes, on modern phones and tablets with Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox. Keep in mind the cutout is computed on your own device, so a phone takes longer than a laptop and very large images are best avoided.
Can I use a solid colour background instead of transparent?
Yes. Right below the result you can choose transparent, white, black, violet or any custom colour from the picker. The colour is baked into the downloaded file, which is exactly what marketplaces requiring a white background need.

Why does my cutout have a white border around it?
If your photo had margins, those margins are still there, only transparent. Most viewers paint transparency as white, so it looks like a frame. It is not a real border: place the cutout on any background and it disappears. We keep the original image dimensions on purpose so your templates and layouts do not shift; crop it to the object afterwards in your editor if you need that.
What we do clean is the edge fringe: when the background is a uniform colour, we undo that colour from the semi-transparent edge pixels, so your cutout does not drag white along when you place it on another background.
